The Purpose of the Pearl River County Tourism Council
is to advance Pearl River County as a tourism destination. The Council
will not only identify Pearl River County’s assets, but also develop a
plan of action to market the County as a tourist attraction. A variety
of marketing and advertising tools will be considered and implemented.
An important objective of the Tourism Council is to preserve and
advocate the character, culture, history and tradition of Pearl River
County. The Tourism Council will help promote the year-round
attractions, such as, museums, historic landmarks, the Crosby Arboretum,
unique downtown shopping, horseback riding, fishing, golfing, swimming,
area resorts, and much more. The Council will assist in publicizing
local events, such as, the annual Blueberry Jubilee, Picayune’s Fall and
Spring Street Fairs, the June Summer Blues Out and Art Walk. The Council
will collaborate with other tourism entities in the surrounding counties
and adjacent states.
The Pearl River County Tourism Council is comprised of individuals who
are also affiliated with local organizations or government agencies: the
Pearl River County Welcome Center, the City of Poplarville, the City of
Picayune, the Greater Picayune Chamber of Commerce, the Poplarville
Chamber of Commerce, Picayune Main Street, the Greater Picayune Arts
Council, Picayune’s Retiree Attraction Committee, and Poplarville’s
Blueberry Jubilee Committee.
The Tourism Council’s officers are Bill Edwards, President; Tammy
Campbell, 1st Vice President; Marcelle Tims, 2nd Vice President; Carol
Fitzwilliam, Secretary; and Reba Beebe, Treasurer. The Board of
Directors also includes Helen Keyes, Kris Landrum, Barbara McGrew, Diane
Miller, Cindy Schoonmaker, Rose Scott, Martha Sheppard, Carolyn Terry,
and Shirley Wiltshire.
The Council meets the third Thursday of each month. Membership dues are
a nominal $25.00 per year. New members are welcomed and encouraged to
join.
